Sound & music

Added by SiggyPop over 2 years ago

Hi all! ;>)

Here are my 1st ideas: (About music, themes, loops, a hymn or anthem for the game etc.)

The various events are supported by different acoustic backgrounds. So I try to compose the right sound and music for each scene.

When the game starts, a frame/ screen appears with the name of the game – and you hear
a melody played by trumpets &/or trombones or horns.

Then a video follows which shows the map, like you’ll fly over it, accompanied by a bleak, gloomy sound and melody which reflects the mood of the game…
Perhaps we could install a 2nd clip which reflects the action of the game in short form.

After this the start/home screen appears, where you can choose “new game” or “continue” – supported by the game theme (anthem).

… Inspired by the Game SHENMUE (I’m a big fan!) I’d like to compose a theme for each character in the game.

OK, these are my 1st ideas on it – let’s create something cool! ;>)

Siggy!

From time to time I'm gonna post some stuff here - just ideas & examples. 1st I'm analyzing and composing - phase I - then, when all is clear, I start recording - phase II a.s.o. ... if u got any ideas or wishes, what u want to have as a background, just tell me - we can work it out. ;>)
I'm glad, to work on this project with u! Let'z have fun (slang :P )
I play all kind(s) of music - except Rap and other brainless stuff... :P & I'm also the leader of the f-group
"Rock, Blues Rock & Hard Rock"! ;>) Join, if u like (but it's in german!)
/* & it's been a while, since I went to school, so, have merci, that my english is not as good as it was some decades ago ... :P ;) */

Hi folks, :)

there's not much going on here anyway, so I'll treat myself to a break. But I saw a lot of musical material and did some classical and rockmusic. I'm currently playing a lot in E major - the most suitable scale for the guitar - I'll also let some of that flow into Ilmendur... Each key has its own peculiarities.

Then see you again soon. All the best!

Sigurd. ;>)

Hi all, :)

I'm in the process of composing the right music for the landscapes.
The first thing you have to imagine is a landscape in a fairytale land. Each area has its own background music.
I was thinking of E major/ C# minor.
The transitions should of course be fluent...The music should of course be subtle in the background.
When I look at some games, the ratio is extremely inappropriate. Way too loud to knock you out of your chair. lol :D We should not make the same mistake.

OK, let's see what I can think of. See you soon!
Your bard,
Sigurd! ;>)

Correct sampling and bit rate when recording.
There are different settings here: for CDs, DVDs, audio file for broadcast use, mp3 file for Internet and mp3 player.
Which would you suggest here?

I suppose there’s nothing wrong with mp3, though refi has recommended to
use Opus. Since that’s a rather new format, I guess you’d need pretty
new tools to generate it, so just stick with mp3 for now.

The recording file type in Cubase is mostly wave - but it takes up a lot of storage space.
We've touched on this topic before, I think - just to remind ... Just
came across this.

WAVE is lossless, right? Try FLAC instead; it’s also lossless, but
compressed. It should take less space than a WAVE file. I suppose you
can use ffmpeg to transcode from WAVE to FLAC:

$ ffmpeg -i /path/to/infile.wav /path/to/outfile.flac

Speaking of the Internet: It occurred to me that we could also simply make a browser game - for a start - would be less effort for such a small team. There are many browser games these days - do you know Sherwood? I used to play that some years ago...
This type of games is called mmorpg. What do you think?

I have no experience in trying to make browser games, and I’d rather
like to stick with C++. I do doubt that it would go any faster; the
effort is effectively the same.

Hello again! :)

As mentioned last time, here are a few loops without resolution on the subject of landscape music.

First of all, keyboard-wise - classic arrangements are still being planned.

Sigurd. ;>)

' Here are some demos - the rest goes to the dms.

Hello everyone, :)

I'm back (the terminator's saying) - after a short creative break, I'm back to work with renewed strength! But I haven't been idle either - I've only played what I like and have more ideas that I can let in here. Got some nature sounds to use as background - but need to crop first as the files are too big to upload here. More on that shortly.

Yours,
SiggyPop. ;>)

' We could also throw in a few real classics if you want: (Here's a slightly spiced up example :D)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cVikZ8Oe_XA

  • I studied some of the style of David Gilmour (Pink Floyd):
He uses semitone bends in the minor pentatonic scale! FYI: There are no semitones in the pentatonic scale! (Which in turn reminds me of Wes Montgomery, whose style I've studied for over 3 years: He also slides into the note from a semitone below, which creates the jazzy sound.) This leads me to the following conclusion: He extends the pentatonic scale in E minor by adding the two semitones F# and C#, thereby resulting in a Dorian scale! This probably won't tell you too much, but for me this is a breakthrough: I improvise in the minor pentatonic scale and occasionally make a brief excursion into the Dorian scale... awesome! :D ;) I had done that before, just not as consciously! This will have a huge impact on my future guitar playing! OK, look forward to my future recordings! Until then! ;)

  • You never stop learning, they say - and that's probably true! That's a good thing - you can always enjoy something new!

' Here's one of my favs from Pink Floyd: Enjoy! ;)

RE: Sound & music - Added by SiggyPop 6 months ago

Here is a brief explanation of my latest achievements: If I now, for example, playing an E minor pentatonic scale, I'll pull from the note F# to the G, hold the string on the note G and do a vibrato, so vibrate it - which gives the whole improvisation a Doric touch! Everything requires extremely good hearing, practice and technique! But it's fascinating! Same with the sound C# to D...
In this style I wanna do the next compositions ... Think, will be awesome ... ;>)

Nice to see you back again! I haven’t been idle either... I have been
working on the GUI library integration. On Thursday another deadline
passes for an article to submit, but I do hope that over the easter days
I can come up with the first UI elements for the game.

Heyyy! :D Good to hear, we're back on track! - Yeah, we're all very busy, but it's fun to come back to our hobby project!

  • If you are a musician, you are always happy! (Except some women pull you down every now and then... ) But for me here is a place where I can live my dreams... Cya soon, Quintus & all!

  • Also discovered a new type of beer - where I always buy wood: Wild monkeys, lol. :P I took a few cans with me - to test - & for the next guitar session... Well, a bit bitter - and a little less original wort... Bavarian beer is better, lol! :P
OK, I hope to see you all soon - fresh as ever! :D

Hi folks, :)

here are some keyboard backgrounds again: As a supplement to the last ones in E major, this time in C# minor, which is the minor parallel of E major - so it can be combined. I'll pick a few and then mix them with nature sounds. So we're getting a little closer to creating some landscape backgrounds.

Happy Holidays everyone!

RE: Sound & music - Added by SiggyPop 5 months ago

I once again mentioned in my group on facebook that we are still looking for graphic artists and designers. Maybe someone will finally be found! ;)

RE: Sound & music - Added by quintus 5 months ago

Hi Quintus! Sth's wrong: Can't load 'em up to the dms - see screenshot:

Mhhhh. That looks suspicious. I’m not sure what is the cause, but I will look into it in due time. I am not at home currenctly and thus cannot easily do maintenance on my home server, but I hope I can resolve the problem after my return in the next days.

As always, thank you for your astonishing work.

Hello, :) had a melody in my head after waking up today - I brought it to paper so I wouldn't forget it. Think could be a good fit for Ilmendur. I just call it dream melody. Appropriate I think. I will arrange as soon as I find time.
And please remind me to load up the rest to the dms, when it's running again.

RE: Sound & music - Added by SiggyPop 5 months ago

Hi folks, :)

I entered the dream melody in tux guitar so that you also have an audio sample. Hope I can finally find some time for a guitar & arrangement session this weekend. I could well imagine arranging this part in a classic or folk style as a landscape background. Let's see what comes of it. ;>)
Composing and songwriting is an ongoing process - capturing ideas, combining, arranging - endlessly... ;)

  • SP.

' You could just as well play it ternary (as a shuffle) - would also be good ...

RE: Sound & music - Added by SiggyPop 5 months ago

OK! :) Here are the first takes. For some reason the new version of Audacity didn't work - so I was forced to try a new audio recorder - cool too. As the saying goes: There is seldom any harm where there is not also a benefit. ;) Maybe I can finally record directly from Guitar Rig with it... gotta try it out. - Well then - enjoy the recordings - some are classical some just for fun. ;)

Thank you Denerio! :)

Glad I can contribute again! ;) I'll work something out again over the weekend and delve into the technology a bit... Have a nice weekend!

RE: Sound & music - Added by SiggyPop 5 months ago

Hi all, :)

I wrote something again - speaking of E major - C# minor:
Here are some pentatonic phrases - “between” the scales. The tones are b c# e f# g - all over 3 octaves up and down.
Works well in a solo. Up: ending in E, down in C#m. I'll install it somewhere.

  • SP.

RE: Sound & music - Added by SiggyPop 5 months ago

A little bit more:
Here are a few triplet phrases in 3 positions of the C# minor pentatonic scale:
' The notes e and c# are "strong" notes here - so you can play towards these notes when improvising...
And again we have some Solo building blocks. ;)
Doo-del-die Doo-del-die Doo-del-die Doo-del-die Doo-del-die Doo-del-die - dooom! :D
I like this kind of finger exercises - for me it's a kind of meditation...

RE: Sound & music - Added by SiggyPop 5 months ago

#2:

C#m Penta Triplets 2 is just crying out to be resolved to the note e or c#. I left it open.
' I'll continue later - have to go to town first...

RE: Sound & music - Added by SiggyPop 5 months ago

I wish you a good morning :)

Here's some Sunday improvisation in C#m: I just thought of it and it fits the topic. These types of licks can be practiced endlessly and speeded up until you can play them in your sleep.

RE: Sound & music - Added by SiggyPop 5 months ago

Good Morning! :)

Had a melody in my head again this morning - you have to leave everything there and take it to paper immediately - otherwise it's gone... So here it is:
I've written more lately - but it's on my old computer - I'll have to transfer it as soon as I find time.
