Sound & music

Added by SiggyPop over 2 years ago

Hi all! ;>)

Here are my 1st ideas: (About music, themes, loops, a hymn or anthem for the game etc.)

The various events are supported by different acoustic backgrounds. So I try to compose the right sound and music for each scene.

When the game starts, a frame/ screen appears with the name of the game – and you hear
a melody played by trumpets &/or trombones or horns.

Then a video follows which shows the map, like you’ll fly over it, accompanied by a bleak, gloomy sound and melody which reflects the mood of the game…
Perhaps we could install a 2nd clip which reflects the action of the game in short form.

After this the start/home screen appears, where you can choose “new game” or “continue” – supported by the game theme (anthem).

… Inspired by the Game SHENMUE (I’m a big fan!) I’d like to compose a theme for each character in the game.

OK, these are my 1st ideas on it – let’s create something cool! ;>)

Siggy!

From time to time I'm gonna post some stuff here - just ideas & examples. 1st I'm analyzing and composing - phase I - then, when all is clear, I start recording - phase II a.s.o. ... if u got any ideas or wishes, what u want to have as a background, just tell me - we can work it out. ;>)
I'm glad, to work on this project with u! Let'z have fun (slang :P )
I play all kind(s) of music - except Rap and other brainless stuff... :P & I'm also the leader of the f-group
"Rock, Blues Rock & Hard Rock"! ;>) Join, if u like (but it's in german!)
/* & it's been a while, since I went to school, so, have merci, that my english is not as good as it was some decades ago ... :P ;) */

Hiya, :)

I'm at the same point, but here's some help:

https://wiki.ubuntuusers.de/JACK/

or here:

https://www.gearnews.de/jack-audio-einrichtung-linux/

u just have to translate it in EN.

It's been about 10 years, since I was working with linux, so I have to learn again from the scratch lol. :P

But it is feasible - at that time I set up Jack and everything else - with Reaper, as far as I remember - when I was working with Marvin on the ORR ... I just have to deal with the matter again ...;)

My main problem is, that this laptop hasn't got an input for the guitar and no cd rom, so I'm gonna try to put my ext-soundcard in with usb and try to find some drivers for ux2. Theoretically it should work ...
If I find sth. else, I'll let u know.

Cya & HAVE A NICE DAY! ;)

xet7, I believe it does as well, and is probably tuned better in the distro, but could not say much more. Ive more had an issue with wrapping my brain around setup/configuration.

I don’t know how these musical input devices work, but if you need a
CDROM drive, can’t you just use an external one connected via USB?

You can also check if you can add hardware to the laptop itself. Your
laptop is very easy to open; just unscrew the handful of screws on the
underside and you can easily remove the central cover. I used that to
exchange the traditional magnetic hard disk with an SSD. Btw. opening
and freeing the inside from dust once a year or so is certainly a good
idea anyway.

RE: Sound & music - Added by SiggyPop over 1 year ago

Good idea, quintus! ;)

Didn't know, that ext. cd rom drives exist! You never stop learning ... and me as a dinosaur... lol :D
It would of course be cool if I could also transfer the music etc. to the laptop, because it is super fast and also totally quiet - my old computers, on the other hand, blow as loud as a fan heater. :D

OK, I'm a lil' bit busy - shopping for 5 days - all is closed until Monday... so get enough supplies folks!
Just found a motivational song - you can apply it to anything:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nULs4JW3tPI

Thought I have to give that to you too! OK, then everyone stays motivated, coool (with 3 os, lol - that's my saying) and have a few nice and creative days off!

  • I put the last riff into the blues scheme - load it up in the next days...

Cya then & have a good time!
Yours,
SP. ;)

RE: Sound & music - Added by SiggyPop over 1 year ago

Hello guys, :)

wrote and recorded a new riff:
Here are a few takes - I load the rest into the dms department. ;)
Sounds a bit "dark" & "misterious" - so it's played slooowly... ;)

Did some experimentation and found the option to record the melody with bell tones. So if you can use bells, I'll do something with them.

I've also rummaged through arrangement books and will be arranging parts for winds in Eb and Bb in the future. That sounds more realistic.
OK, there's a lot more - just a few news here. I have to deal with a few bureaucrats first... More as soon as I have some time again.

Sigurd. ;>)

Hi all, :)

here some classic picking. # 2 with a rocky conclusion. A lot can be made of it...

RE: Sound & music - Added by Denerio over 1 year ago

As always very nice work. For some reason the last two pieces (Em Classic 1, Em Classic 2) cannot be played. Maybe something went wrong during the upload process?

I think it might be time to do some sort of list (an album) of the single tracks that will be hearable in the game, don't you think? We could seperate between complete tracks and atmospheric themes, for example.

RE: Sound & music - Added by SiggyPop over 1 year ago

Thanks, Denerio! :D

  • Hmmm... I'll check it out. There is still a lot to upload as soon as the Sunday session is over. ;>)
  • Sure, that's a good idea. I thought the same.

Yours,
Siggy. ;>)

Hi again! :)
Well, I've tested the 2 files, you mentioned: Workin' well. You need a player for *mid-files...

Hi all! :)

Just tinkered with a chord sequence for a few hours:
Will be a new song, but I think I can arrange some parts of it also for the RPG.
Sometimes not so dreary - I personally usually only play positive music, which gets me well - life is stressful enough in recent times - as probably for all of us...
In the future, you plan to briefly present the new ideas in the forum on the basis of a small demo (so that you can see that something is still goin' on, which in turn motivates you a little, even if you may not understand everything about them) and then upload the finished pieces or parts to the DMS.
Well, now on with the new piece - don't have a name for it yet, I just call it 'Theme X', ;).
I started here from G major, whose minor parallel is E minor, so | G | Em| (is always suitable), then in the 2nd pass instead of Em Bm with A in the bass, which results in an interesting sound. Then a small bass run with C, B and A as a transition to D major, which fits well with G & Em, D then with sus somewhat refined (sounds like a recipe, lol :D) and finished is the main theme for a new song! ;>) To round off, add D9... yeah, that sounds even better...

// Not yet worked out.

RE: Sound & music - Added by SiggyPop over 1 year ago

A little later:

Finally had a bit of time - and a new idea for a new song - it's in major, so "positive rock", as I call it :D but I could also describe it in minor - also designed part 2. I call it Glue Rock! ;>)
Your bard,
Sigurd. ;>)

RE: Sound & music - Added by SiggyPop over 1 year ago

Also made a 2nd Part for the Classic Piece, I've made last week:
(Try to combine both parts)

RE: Sound & music - Added by SiggyPop over 1 year ago

Hi all! :)

About that "posthorn melody":

OK, I quickly put the notes into the right format, had to adjust the 1/4 note - as dotted quarters - because otherwise this doesn't work mathematically. First in C major, then transposed to F, as it is better to arrange horns in this key.
Then I came up with the idea to rewrite it in minor, as minor is more suitable for the game...

  • For me, however, a horn in the game should sound better like this: tataaa tataaa :D I'll write that next time...

Your bard,
Sigurd! ;>)

RE: Sound & music - Added by SiggyPop over 1 year ago

sth. new - the theme of crisis - not "outcomposed" yet - just the 1st ideas:

Like the father of my friend said: There's nothing bad, where there isn't anything good as well (or should we say either?) ... he's right, I think! ;)

Your bard,
Sigurd - and the frustrated newbie of graphics, lol! :D :P

  • I know - peepie - the sound of tux guitar - but good to write music in a fast way... but coool classic I think - I'll work it out soon...

I get up, and nothing gets me down ...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SwYN7mTi6HM

motivates me again - I hope, u 2 ;)

Or this song motivates me: I had to compete against 3 lead guitarists to be in the band "Restless Breed" - the good thing was, I had studied the solo this time, hehe - and I played them out, lol! :P
Just listen:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ae829mFAGGE

Or this one, when my friend Burt & me drove in a black Porsche to Regensburg to watch ZZ TOP:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7wRHBLwpASw

I play that too... ;)

OK, but back to (the) present or presence? (Google translator stops now, whe you wanna translate too much - so forgive me :P) - , it's important to get up again, when you're down ... think of it, when it happens to you! Think of the moments, when YOU were really coool ... ;) ... with 3 os ... my saying ;)

RE: Sound & music - Added by SiggyPop over 1 year ago

Hello folks, :)

after an intense thearpie session, it can go on again. :D Little joke, lol.
Of course, this with blender would be feasible if you take enough time for it. But first I continue with the music, for which I was originally engaged.
It is also sometimes good to let everything happen and arrange everything. There are still masses of notes to be worked out. I'm going to deal with it first, so that not everything I've worked out was in vain. I also have some pieces, and arrangements that I haven't uploaded yet. For me, music is still my first priority.
OK, cya then.

Your bard,
Sigurd. ;>)

Here my motivations song of the day: enjoy! ;)

RE: Sound & music - Added by SiggyPop over 1 year ago

Hi all, :)

Have made a background for our c# programmers, lol :D - of course in c # in blues schema: ;)
Maybe for a side quest or so ...
Here some demos, the rest goes to the dms.

Your bard,
Sigurd. ;>)

RE: Sound & music - Added by SiggyPop over 1 year ago

  • Made a new folder: funny backingtracks for side quests.

OK, and here sth. from the last weekend - a few demos, the rest goes to dms.
Enjoy. (Plan to mix this stuff with some sound effects or natural sounds etc.)

  • Classic Solo im Em pentatonic (btrks)

RE: Sound & music - Added by SiggyPop over 1 year ago

well - couldn't upload more to the dms - error - service not available ...

One question, quintus:
in the dms are a few boxes (I didn't touch them yet) for file release. I left them open - if I do nothing, does it mean, everyone can see it? It is for all...

Yours,
SP.

The DMS is not publically visible. It is member-only. What you check
in these boxes is pretty much irrelevant, because it is effectively
overridden on the project configuration level, whose settings are only
editable by project managers (i.e. Sydney and me). I have done this
because in this early stage of the project I would rather not like the
assets to be copied and used in different projects by a random
bypasser. Once we have a playable state in the game, I will open the
DMS for everyone's anonymous access.

To repeat, as for now, accessing the DMS requires logging into
Redmine, but anyone with a Redmine account can read it. If it is your
expressive wish, Siggy, to change that, I can do it.

And no, I do not feel insulted. Why should I? You are putting so much
effort into the game's music that I can only be permanently stunned.
It was just that I had a few difficult days I would rather not relate
in detail here in public. The others are right on the topic.

I have, by the way, acquired some insights into Blender and I think I
can tackle the test area myself soon.

RE: Sound & music - Added by SiggyPop about 1 year ago

Hiya, :)

I'm sorry you had so many problems! I also have enormous stress but still try to work out my notes. More soon.
'bout dms: that's ok. Just wanted to know, if it's open for our friends here.
Goodie - I try to continue the upload again - last time the service was not reachable.
Maybe I can support you later at blender, but at the moment I have enough to do with music.

OK, I wish everyone a rrrockin' evening!

SP. ;>)
