Description

The antagonist needs a theme music in any case. Here are my thoughts on it. Let me first describe his character. Hieronymus is a very dangerous character (unlike Dr. M. from TSC, who as you might know, would not kill a fly knowingly). Hieronymus appears as a merchant on Earth, where he acts formally and cordially, but in the background is entirely scrupulous. He sends out his minions to kill knowingly. Himself, he usually deems himself to fine for fight, but in fact, Hieronymus is a skilled swordsman and (in fairly land) mage. If it is necessary, he will kill without a whim. His stick he takes with him when going outside on Earth contains a sword in case you did not know (I just found out myself). I think it's fair to describe him as an early version of a Mafia boss. To reach the goals he set himself he will do everything, though he won't use violence or has violence be used if there's a more elegant way (e.g. by use of his enormous richness). At the time the game is set, Hieronymus' primary goal is revenge for his banning, by killing all descendents of those who banned him. As a secondary goal, he wants to regain the emperor position he lost when he was banned and have all mages be subjugated under his will. That doesn't mean he has no other facets. He enjoy's Earth's literature as well as the myths from fairy land, and it is rumoured he published in his long life under several pseudonymus ballads and stories.

That being his character, I currently have the following thoughts on a possible theme music. While he acts nicely, the music should be as well, but always with a dangerous tone in it. Like a silent sea where there are ominous bubbles from below raising to the surface, from a monster lying there (think of the scene before Moria's gates if you know the Lord of the Rings). When Hieronymus then drops the facade in fairy land, the theme switches from there on to a fully frightening variant of what was before only hinted at. Because Hieronymus' position in the story is very exposed and he walks between the worlds regularyly anyway, I lift the restriction for contemporary instruments for him. Siggy suggested an e-guitar based theme, and I'm not aversed to the idea, but remember that Hieronymus is met early in the game where the player doesn't know of his plans. The music played at that point should not make it obvious that he's the arch enemy. Reserve that for the part when Hieronymus drops the facade in the desert ruins. There's also the final bossfight against Hieronymus, which should reuse Hieronymus' theme music. When using e-guitars, please beware that it will stand out among the usual environmental music. Maybe that's best reserved for the part when it's clear that Hieronymus is the antagonist, as then there's no point anymore in concealing his true nature. The music before that could be kind of mysterious with dangerous parts, but without the e-guitar as it would probably be too stark a contrast.
